One of my favorite things to do is listen to mellow/ethereal vocals done by black women...This is an obviously incomplete yet ever growing "leisure list" of songs I know and enjoy, but hopefully others have songs they too can add to the list. Please, enjoy!

First I want to share "Free As A Bird", sung by Vivian Greene. I absolutely love this one. I am sure it's not more popular because of the Beatles song by the same name, but when I heard this at 2am on KPFA, I fell in love. And it had barely any views on youtube, a couple hundred when I first checked. But at any rate, lyrically the song is soul-touching, and Vivian's voice makes me feel like I'm listening to the good ol' days of RnB...

Song number two here is "Female Energy", sung and written by the talented, youthful Willow Smith. She is single-handedly taking Ethereal RnB exactly where I've always wanted it to go. My husband doesn't get my hype, but mark my words in 10 years everyone else will be acting like they just discovered her. She is clearly getting supported/taught/lead by some of the greater black female singers in the community, and I am also a huge fan of her mini-fro (which is the exact style I wore at her age...kids used to tease me, but clearly I was ahead of my time  Wink ...) Anyway, her youth shines through, perhaps that annoys some, but her "Whatever" gave me chills....

I put the acapella version of this song, so that it would be mellow enough for my theme. The lyrics to this song are incredibly powerful, and Beverly makes you feel it. It is always worth a re-listen. "Keep This Fire Burning".

I was a huge Alicia Keys fan as a kid. Or, her cd "Diary of Alicia Keys" happened to be one of 5 cds I owned Laughing . At any rate, I went looking for Butterflyz online after I moved out back when I was 18...I found this mash-up of "Never Felt This Way" and "Butterflyz" and was hooked. I've listened to this mix hundreds of times since, it makes me want to move in a feminine way...Alicia is so talented it's ridiculous. She makes this piano-playing, lyric-writing, soul-sangin thing look easy.

At first I wasn't ridiculously interested in Jhene Aiko. I heard that "I don't love you" song on the radio once and my husband and I used the tune of that chorus to say stuff to each other the rest of that day...it didn't stick beyond that. But, like I said, I love adding to my Mellow Mamas playlist...and on a day when I was literally sifting through garbage on youtube, I happened to click on this one. I now know why it has so many views...

Okay, so I already put a Willow song, but this next song also features a young sister named Mecca Kalani, and for a collaboration between two incredibly young teen women in the diaspora, I loved it. Here's "Drowning"

Speaking of Mecca Kalani...."Feel Me". Such a pure voice, I wish she had an album for me to run while I cleaned the house.

I haven't been on in a few days, but I thought I'd add to this one, since it's getting views. Here I have "Days to Come". I love this song--it fits the theme perfectly. "Move away from your Western guns, travel towards Eastern suns..." And her voice...like I said--calm, mellow. What can't one enjoy about this?

When I heard this song, I felt so much. "When I feel worthy to receive, the universe opens up to me..." Lyrically, amazing. And this is proof of why artists should write for themselves--they naturally do what's best for themselves, musically. Georgia Anne Muldrow knows herself very well, and I am glad my husband introduced me to this Queen. Here is "Never in Vain".

I had to add Aaliyah--I know this one is lingering out of the word "mellow", but you don't get more mellow than the dirty south, right??? That's a joke, by the way. I've loved this "Are You That Somebody" since I was a child and it came out on the radio....and you know it was on a mix that was playing when I was with some children, and a little Chinese girl looked dreamily out the window and said "I like this song." Testimonial is not much more clear than that.

There is no greater classic than this. 20 minute songs. We don't do that well anymore, do we? Speaking on all of humankind. At any rate, there is no greater pleasure than a hardcore Mellow Mama. Disco and Funk allowed many to come out of the woodwork, much to my pleasure, and don't you just love to hear people reminisce on their time in the Discos? They sound so high and happy--and they are right. That could probably never be reproduced. Donna Summer's "Love to Love You", the long version.

There's nothing mellow about the beginning roar, but the rest is...I like this one. Treat me like fire gives the right feeling. Definitely a Mellow Mama song, and a Mama to keep eyes on!

So this one I've seen get a ton of hate because (apparently) she says the words wrong and in a terrible accent and the African people of that dialect feel disrespected. I can agree with that and flow with that. I have no clue of the words, though, so I still like the song.

Imany is probably the Queen of mellow voices, and so I am glad to put her here, and perhaps have someone delve deeper into her works! I include here her ever popular "You Will Never Know", for the enjoyment of all...

As an Afro-Latina myself, I love hearing black women carry me away in Spanish...it is lovely and satisfying to listen to their voices, and Buika is no exception! I was never really introduced to my South American side, so I do not understand much she is saying, however being a Mellow Mama rather transcends this, does it not? Presenting "No habrá nadie en el mundo".

Y'akoto's voice is so throaty, I want to listen when the rain is falling gently outside...The song I chose to share of hers is "What Makes You Strong"...when I was listening to her album "Babyblues" this one caught my attention, and I loved the message.

This woman has a voice that made me stop where I was the first time I heard it...this song in particular gave me that ultimate feeling--you know the one where you just know you have stumbled on something truly, amazingly wonderful? That's the one. Lianne La Havas goes beyond talent, she submerges you. I would say "ethereal" doesn't begin to describe her musical ability with "Lost and Found".

Nneka makes some of the most beautiful music videos of anybody these days...I feel as though good music videos are an artform that evades most people--they don't know the recipe! But all of hers are captivating, and she is captivating in all of the ones I have seen so far. This song is "Restless" and is no exception--feelings are evoked, and romance in the air...

Another multi-lingual beauty, Esperanza Spalding is captivating both as an artist and as a woman. Perhaps that's why so many people felt it personal in this video when she showed herself daydreaming about a past relationship with a woman while living with a handsome King? I'm not sure I ever would have known if I wasn't looking for the video to share, but I like this song and that is enough for me...and music videos are short spurts of acting, regardless, so I really believe this song showcased many of her strengths...namely, music Laughing

Allright, getting to the end for today...I always think about adding to this thread because it is one that gets the most views! I introduce here Noora Noor's song "Someday We'll All Be Free". This woman's voice is heaven, I could listen to her sing anything. Her tone is forever ethereal, and she is blessed as a person who sounds no different when singing live.

I will be the first to say that Conya Doss has the voice of an angel! I have nothing but support for her slow, melodic music..."The One" is a song that has a ton of replay value.

IS ERYKAH BADU NOT ON THIS LIST YET???? What have I DONE? lol, we all know damn well this girl is like the Original Queen of Ethereal RnB. I just love everything she does, she studied under Queen Afua and it definitely shows with her work and music...she is even the spokes-model for ICTC (the same organization that trained me to be a doula)....so she is a well-rounded, amazing woman. She is human, she has had a few times where I had to give her the side-eye or distance myself from her opinion, but she overall is a positive woman whose healing touch definitely spreads far and wide! This one is her song "Cleva", which I enjoy because of her honesty, relate-ability, and of course...that voice!

What ever happened to Queen Ashanti? She just kind of fell off, didn't she? But she ruled for a few moments there, and I would NOT be angry at a come back! Her song "foolish" was classic, btw, at least classic if you love music!
